2021 Ski World Championship has a new ambassador
Aug 22, 2019·Alpine SkiingSofia Goggia is the new Ambassador of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2021. The Olympic champion from Bergamo has always been a staunch lover of the Queen of the Dolomites, and this deal is the result of a relationship that has constantly evolved in recent years. And of course, Olympia delle Tofane is a key element of this love. The famous slope of the Women’s FIS Alpine Ski World Cup will be the protagonist in the World Championships 2021.
On that slope, Sofia was twice second in 2017; in January 2018, she won one of the two downhill races in a historic duel with her friend/rival Lindsey Vonn. That victory in Cortina paved the way to the Olympic gold medal that she won just a few days later in PyeongChang.
Sofia Goggia is now ready to fully live the experience of the World Championships of Cortina and the town itself becoming its Ambassador in the world. The image of the World Championships, its values and anything that makes Cortina unique have found a special athlete, who joins the local champion Kristian Ghedina.
In Cortina main plaza will be announced the agreement between Goggia and Cortina 2021 and the Italian champion will be welcomed by: the President of Fondazione Cortina 2021 Alessandro Benetton, and the CEO Valerio Giacobbi; the Mayor of Cortina Gianpietro Ghedina; the President of FISI Flavio Roda; the other World Championships’ Ambassador Kristian Ghedina; the President of the ropeways group Consorzio Impianti a Fune Marco Zardini and the President of the hoteliers’ association of Cortina Roberta Alverà.
“It’s a great honour to become Ambassador of Cortina 2021 – says Sofia Goggia –Olympia delle Tofane has always been my favourite slope; here I achieved great results in the past seasons. Cortina offers a unique atmosphere: when you take the ski-lifts, you are surprised by the beauty of the area. From a technical point of view, in my opinion it’s the most beautiful stage of the World Cup season, because both the training slopes and the races slopes are in perfect conditions, and because here the needs of the athletes come first. I thank Fondazione Cortina for this great opportunity; I’ll work hard to be in good shape for the World Championships.- Cortina will always have a special place in my heart: it was in Cortina that I got my first red leader bib ahead of Lindsey Vonn two years ago, it was in Cortina that I took my first picture with the US champion, and it was always in Cortina that – even if I’d just come back from an injury – I paid homage to her last year, when she announced her retirement from ski racing”.
“It’s a real pleasure to have Sofia Goggia as Ambassador of the next FIS Alpine World Ski Championships – states Alessandro Benetton, President of Fondazione Cortina 2021 – Sofia is a world-class champion of the Italian team and a great web influencer, a person who is appreciated for her intelligence and humour. I’m sure that she will succeed in promoting our brand Cortina and, above all, the World Championships 2021 in an innovative way throughout the world with a view to attract the curiosity of people towards a sports event that will draw attention to the area around Cortina and the Dolomites, UNESCO world heritage.”
“Sofia Goggia has definitely become one of the spearheads of the Italian team in the last years – says the President of FISI Flavio Roda–, and she’s a real celebrity thanks to her communication skills, her perfect knowledge of foreign languages, her kindness, but also thanks to the enthusiasm that she can awaken when she’s competing."
