50 years | Vreni Schneider | FIS Alpine
Aug 23, 2018·Alpine SkiingBorn in Elm, Switzerland on Nov. 26th, 1964, Verena 'Vreni' Schneider has been the dominant female skier of her generation and one of the greatest skiers in the history of the technical races. Schneider made her World Cup debut at the age of 20 and won her first ever World Cup event on Dec. 1984, a GS in Santa Caterina Valfurva. From that moment on Schneider established a dominance in Giant Slalom and Slalom by winning 14 World Cup races during the 1988–89 season she won a feat nobody had ever achieved this before (Ingemar Stenmark once won 13 races on the Men's side), and her record has yet to be beaten since then. She also claimed the top spot in 12 World Cup slalom events in a row between 1988 and 1990. Schneider's tally includes three Overall World Cups (1989, 1994, 1995), eleven discipline World Cup titles in Slalom and GS and a total of 55 World Cup wins (ranked no. 3 all-time behind Moser-Pröll and Vonn). She also won five medals at the Winter Olympics including 3 golds (Slalom and Giant Slalom at Calgary in 1988 and Slalom at Lillehammer in 1994), and six medals at the World Championships including 3 more golds (Giant Slalom at Crans-Montana in 1987 and Vail in 1989; Slalom at Saalbach in 1991). In April 1995, after eleven successful seasons, she announced her retirement from active skiing.
