German Alpine Championships 2018

In Germany, the first part of the National Championships was held in Garmisch.

Both downhills took place on Thursday, and Michaela Wenig and Kitzbuehel winner Thomas Dressen emerged victorious.

The super-Gs that had to be cancelled earlier in the week were rescheduled on Friday. Michaela Wenig was the fastest in the super-G and grabbed her fifth national title. On the men’s side, the winner of this season’s super-G in Val Gardena, Josef Ferstel, also claimed the German national title in that discipline.

The Germans then moved to Sudelfeld for the tech part of their National Championships. The ladies’ slalom was scheduled on Saturday and won by Andrea Filser, who claimed her first German champion title. Her 10 attempts on the World Cup resulted in a 23rd place in Ofterschwand in 2013.

Sunday saw the men’s slalom in Sudelfeld, and World Cup veteran Fritz Dopfer was able to earn his sixth German championship title. Dopfer, who podiumed in nine World Cups in his career so far, is still struggling with the effects of an injury sustained last season but was still able to claim a seventh place in the slalom in Val d’Isère.

Unfortunately, the giant slaloms scheduled in Garmisch had to be cancelled due to weather-related program changes. They have been rescheduled for 3 April in Bischofswiesen (ladies) and Oberjoch (men). With World Cup athletes Fritz Dopfer and Linus Straßer and giant slalom World Cup winner Viktoria Rebensburg all expected to compete, the starting field will be top class.
