Junior Worlds: Hrovat and Odermatt golden in slalom and downhill

Davos, Switzerland - Meta Hrovat (SLO) and local hero Marco Odermatt raced to gold in slalom and downhill respectively, on the second competition day of the FIS Alpine Junior World Championships which was characterised by abundant sunshine.
Austria’s Franziska Gritsch and Switzerland’s Aline Danioth rounded out the slalom podium in second and third place, +0.72 and +1.25 seconds off the winning pace. Austria’s Katharina Liensberger, who sat in first place following the first leg, did not finish the second run.
19-year-old Hrovat is no stranger to the Junior Worlds podium as she took silver in Are (SWE) last year and team gold in the 2016 edition in Sochi (RUS). She came to Davos straight off a third place in giant slalom from the Audi FIS Ski World Cup competitions in Lenzerheide (SUI) last weekend which was one of her biggest achievements to date.

Odermatt, likewise, is no stranger to the Junior Worlds podium. In 2016, he collected gold in giant slalom and bronze in super-G in Sochi. Two weeks ago, he claimed his first Europa Cup win in giant slalom in Folgaria Lavarone (ITA).
The 20-year-old was joined on today’s downhill podium by Canada’s Sam Mulligan and teammate Lars Roesti. It was a tight battle for gold, silver and bronze as only 0.03 seconds separated the top three.
The downhill was staged as a two-run format as it is 450m vertical. The competition had been moved forward with weather and heavy snow anticipated for 1st February.
