Junior Worlds: Lie conquers downhill

(Davos, Switzerland) Norway’s Kajsa Vickhoff Lie won the final event of the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships which concluded today, 8th February in Davos to win her second gold medal.
With a time of 1:10.10, she set the fastest time in downhill. Switzerland’s Juliana Suter and Russia’s Iulija Pleshkova tried to catch her, but had to settle for second and third place, 0.28 and 0.55 seconds off the winning pace, respectively.
Vickhoff was in tears after the race: “Ending these Championships with another gold medal is just amazing. I knew I was among the favourites, so the pressure was high and I still had to ski well to claim a medal. I have really enjoyed it here in Davos”, the 19-year-old said, who also took gold in super-G.
It was another beautiful day in Davos with fog in the morning but a clear sky just in time for the race to provide good visibility. Due to the fog, the race had to be postponed by 30 minutes.
The downhill was the final event of the Junior World Championships which consisted of ten individual medal events and the team event.
Marc Hodler Trophy
Switzerland won the prestigious Marc Hodler Trophy for the best team performance with 127 points ahead of Austria with 113 and Norway with 90.
“Having this kind of outcome at home Championships is something truly amazing and something that is hard to achieve”, silver medallist Juliana Suter commented on Switzerland’s great success.
