Junior Worlds: Odermatt takes record 4th gold, Lie wins downhill

(Davos, Switzerland) Local hero Marco Odermatt took his fourth gold medal in the event of alpine combined on 4th February – a record at Junior World Championships – while Norway’s Kajsa Vickhoff Lie secured gold in downhill on the ladies’ side.
After gold in downhill, super-G and the team event, 19-year-old Odermatt also secured gold in the alpine combined event. Sitting in sixth position after the slalom run, he laid down the fastest time in super-G to finish 0.25 seconds ahead of teammate Semyel Bissig and Austria’s Raphael Haaser (+0.90), who moved from eight into second place.
Odermatt created history by taking most Junior World Championship gold medals in one edition, surpassing superstar Beat Feuz, who took three gold (downhill, super-G, combined) in the 2017 edition in Altenmarkt (AUT). On Tuesday, 6th February Odermatt could even race to his fifth gold as he is a hot favourite in giant slalom, an event he already won in the 2016 edition in Sochi (RUS).

In ladies’ super-G, Lie raced to gold ahead of Austria’s Franziska Gritsch (+0.05 seconds) and local Stephanie Jenal (+0.63).
Lie recently took her first FIS Europa Cup victory in super-G on home ground in Kvitfjell. While it was her first medal in Davos, Gritsch took her third medal, following silver in slalom and bronze in the team event.
Much to the joy of the local fans and the organisers including its many volunteers, Jenal, who is a student at the sports academy of Davos, took her first Junior World Championship medal with bronze.

Switzerland in the lead
With seven of eleven medal events already awarded, host nation Switzerland is presently leading the medal standings with eight medals (four gold, one silver, three bronze) ahead of Austria with six (one gold, three silver, two bronze) and Norway with two (one gold, one silver).
