PYEONGCHANG - Viktoria Rebensburg (GER) could win a record third medal in the women’s giant slalom on Monday 12 February at Yongpyong Alpine Centre. REBENSBURG won the ladies' giant slalom at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and finished third in the event four years later at Sochi 2014.
REBENSBURG could join Deborah COMPAGNONI (ITA) on a record two Olympic gold medals in the ladies' giant slalom. COMPAGNONI won in 1994 and 1998.
The only German alpine skiers, male or female, who won multiple Olympic gold medals in a single event are Katja SEIZINGER (two in downhill) and Maria HOEFL-RIESCH (two in alpine combined).
REBENSBURG could become the first woman to win three Olympic medals in the event. She now shares the record of two with COMPAGNONI, Vreni SCHNEIDER (SUI), Tina MAZE (SLO) and Perrine PELEN (FRA).
REBENSBURG can become the second woman to win a medal in the same alpine skiing event at three successive Olympic Winter Games, after Marlies SCHILD (AUT) who achieved this in the women's slalom from Torino 2006 to Sochi 2014.

SEIZINGER (three), HOEFL-RIESCH (three) and Markus WASMEIER (GER, two) are the only alpine skiers to win multiple Olympic gold medals for NOC Germany.
Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) won the women's slalom at Sochi 2014. She could become the sixth woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the slalom and giant slalom, after SCHNEIDER, Hanni WENZEL (LIE), Janica KOSTELIC (CRO), Marielle GOITSCHEL (FRA) and Andrea MEAD-LAWRENCE (USA).
MEAD-LAWRENCE is the only U.S. woman to win multiple gold medals in alpine skiing at the Olympic Winter Games. She won the slalom double at the Oslo 1952 Games.
Tessa WORLEY (FRA) won the ladies' giant slalom world title in St. Moritz last year. The last woman to win the Olympic gold medal in this event a year after the world title was COMPAGNONI in 1998.
The only Frenchwoman to win this event at the Olympic Winter Games was Marielle GOITSCHEL in 1964. The last woman to reach the podium for France was PELEN in 1984 (bronze).
Anna VEITH (AUT) finished in second place in this event behind MAZE at Sochi 2014. She won her only Olympic gold medal in the super-G, also in Sochi.
VEITH could join Michaela DORFMEISTER (AUT), Petra KRONBERGER (AUT) and Trude JOCHUM-BEISER (AUT) on a record two Olympic gold medals among Austrian women in alpine skiing.
Austria has nine medals in this event, without winning gold. This is the equal-most medals won by one NOC in a single event at the Olympic Winter Games without winning gold, together with Canada in men's singles figure skating.
The women's giant slalom is the only individual alpine skiing event, male or female, in which Austria lacks a gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games. It can become the first NOC to win all 10 individual alpine skiing disciplines at the Olympic Winter Games.
