Brignone takes first win of the season in Killington GS
Nov 25, 2018·Alpine SkiingFederica Brignone skied a smashing second run to claim her first victory of the season at the Killington (USA) giant slalom race in front of 18,500 spectators. The Italian improved upon her second-place finish in Sölden at the season opener and overtook Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel for the win. The Attacking Viking held the lead following the first run and was able to pick up her first podium of the season with a second-place finish. Stephanie Brunner of Austria, who is on the comeback from a torn ACL sustained at the end of last season, showed her return is more than on pace by securing her career-first podium result in third.
Notable differences between the first and second run course sets challenged athletes to adapt and excitement ensued as the top eight from first run battled for podium positions. But the top three from the first run remained the same in the second with only the placement shifting between Brignone and Mowinckel. Brunner's teammate Katarina Liensberger skied the second run with the fastest time to improve from 28th place to ninth by the end of the day. Sölden winner Tessa Worley of France, meanwhile, had to settle for fifth place after a costly mishap on the second run.
Brignone now leads the giant slalom discipline standings with 180 points to Worley's 145. Mowinckel sits third with 125 points.
The ladies' Audi FIS World Cup tour contests a slalom race at Killington on Sunday 25th November with the first run starting at 10:00 LOC.
