Double World Champion Erik Guay announces retirement
Nov 22, 2018·Alpine SkiingAhead of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup races in Lake Louise, Canadian Erik Guay announced that he will put an end to his career right after the events in his home country.
In not less than 16 years on the World Cup Tour, Erik Guay was able to claim a record of 25 World Cup podiums, setting the a mark among Canadian ski racers. His first podium was in 2003, as he climbed on the second step on the podium in the downhill in Lake Louise. Making this decision in the very same resort was an emotional moment for him, but after yesterday’s incident he felt good to make that call.
In his career, Erik Guay won five World Cup races. Three downhills in Garmisch-Partenkirchen 2007, Val Gardena 2013 and Kvitfjell 2014, and two super-gs in Kvitfejll 2010 and Garmisch-Partenkirchen 2010. But his biggest exploit are his titles at the World Championships. In 2011, Erik Guay became a World Champion for the first time in downhill and in 2017 he was able to repeat the feat and became a World Champion in super-g. He also earned the Crystal Globe in super-g for the 2009/10 season.
The Canadian racer is father of four daughters and is looking forward to spend more time with them. He will stay involved in ski racing through them and may take over some duties for Alpine Canada, continuing to inspire the younger generations.
We wish him all the best for this new chapter in his career and congratulate him for his outstanding and inspiring career.
