Josef "Pepi" Hahnenkamm winner Ferstl

40 years after his father Sepp Ferstl won the downhill in Kitzbuehel, Josef "Pepi" Ferstl became a Hahnenkamm winner himself by taking the super-g race ahead of Johan Clarey (2nd, +0.08) and Dominik Paris (3rd, +0.10).

The final day at the 79th Hahnenkamm races was exciting, with a very tight super-g on the Streif and an unexpected podium. One year after Germany’s triumph with Thomas Dressen, the “deutscher Skiverband” doubled up with Josef Ferst in this years’ super-g. The winner of the Val Gardena super-g 2016 started with bib number one. A number that never made it in the Top 5 of a super-g race since the introduction of the new enrollment system three year ago. But today, Ferstl was able to use the good conditions and claimed his second win in career.

Johan Clarey is 38 years old and known as a strong downhill competitor. He earned four World Cup podiums, including one in the Kitzbuehel downhill two years ago. But this season, he also laid down solid performances in the super-g, with a career best 4th place in Val Gardena. Today in Kitzbuehel, he was able to add a fifth World Cup podium under his belt, his first success in the super-g.

In third position, the “Gams hunter” Dominik Paris grabbed another podium in Kitzbuehel, his 6th in career (4 wins, 2 podiums). The South Tyrolean loves this course and is not afraid to push even in the tough and icy sections. He now scored three podiums in super-g in the current season, including a win in Bormio, and replaced himself in third positions of the very tight discipline standings, right behind the Austrians Vincent Kriechmayr and Matthias Mayer.

This super-g concludes a successful race week in Kitzbuehel, with over 75’000 spectators over the three competition days. Next stop on the men’s Audi FIS Ski World Cup calendar is the Night Race in Schladming on Tuesday evening.
