Ramon Zenhaeusern takes his first slalom World Cup victory
Mar 10, 2019·Alpine SkiingOne year after claiming his first World Cup slalom podium here in Kransjka Gora, Ramon Zenhaeusern takes the win in today's slalom. Henrik Kristoffersen and Marcel Hirscher complete the podium.
The Vitranc Cup concluded today with a slalom on Podkoren. With not less than seven former Kranjska Gora slalom winners (Hirscher, Matt, Kristoffersen, Neureuther, Myhrer, Lizeroux, Moelgg) at the start, the fight promised to be very exciting, but it’s another athlete who ended up at the very top of the podium.
For the first time in his career, Switzerland’s Ramon Zenhäusern was able to earn a World Cup slalom win. He already had two victories from a City Event, a silver medal from the Olympic Games and a podium from last year’s race in Kransjka Gora under his belt, but today the two-meter man laid down a stratospheric second run, that brought him from the 7th place in the first run all the way to the win. This success also brings him into the 3rd place of the slalom ranking, tied with Henrik Kristoffersen, just behind Daniel Yule in second and Marcel Hirscher, who already secured the World Cup globe, in first.
One day after his third career win in giant slalom, Henrik Kristoffersen found his way back to the podium also in slalom. Despite three World cup podiums early in the season, the Norwegian didn’t manage to finish within the Top 3 since Adelboden. But with his good performances in giant slalom, the confidence is coming back also in slalom and he was able to take the lead after the first run in Kranjska Gora and defend a podium position in the second run.
Winner of both races last year in Kransjka Gora, Marcel Hirscher after all managed to earn a third place in today’s slalom. It wasn’t easy, because after a 6th place in yesterday’s giant slalom, and a 6ht place in the first run today, the Austrian super star had to fight hard for that podium placement. And it is now mathematically official: Marcel Hirscher secured his eight straight Overall World Cup win! Something no one ever achieved before. It is also his 20th crystal globe in career, a record he shares only with Lindsey Vonn.
The next and last stop of the 2018/19 Audi FIS Ski World Cup will be the Finals in Soldeu Andorra. The downhill and super-g globes are still up for grab, while the alpine combined standings go to Alexis Pinturault and the giant slalom, slalom and overall globes are clinched by Marcel Hirscher.
