Kriechmayr wins home Super G in Hinterstoder
Feb 29, 2020·Alpine SkiingWhen on Friday evening at the public Bib Pick in Hinterstoder Vincent Kriechmayr (AUT) went on stage and chose to start with bib No.1 in the Super G, it was obvious that the Austrian had a clear plan: attacking on his slope and not worrying about anyone or anything else.
On Saturday, Kriechmayr confirmed his great confidence and opened the Super G with a terrific run. Despite the strong performances of Mauro Caviezel (SUI) and Matthias Mayer (AUT), Kriechmayr never gave up the leader's seat. The Austrian speed skier could celbrate his second Super G victory of the season, the fourth of his career in this discipline and the sixth overall.
"I am very satisfied with my skiing today and being able to win in front of an incredible crowd is simply amazing!" said Kriechmayr after the race.
Runner-up Mauro Caviezel, went very close to the first victory of his career, but eventually finished second, just 0.05s behind the Austrian. It's the third Super G podium of the season, the second in a row for the Swiss athlete, who always finished in the top 5 in this season's Super G races. Thanks to this amazing consistency, Caviezel now leads the Super G standings, with two races left until the small globe is assigned.
Matthias Mayer joined the Austrian party in Hirnterstoder, taking the third spot on the podium as he finished 0.08s behind teammate Kriechmayr.
With Pinturault (FRA) finishing fourth and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (NOR) not finishing the race due to a crash (as he was leading after the first split), the fight for the overall globe is more open than ever. On Sunday the last Alpine Combined of the seaons will take place in Hinterstoder, before the Giant Slalom closes the program on Monday.
