Who was the biggest surprise of the season?
Apr 26, 2021·Alpine SkiingThe 2020/21 was a thrilling season until the very end, with incredible performances from a wide range of athletes.
Petra Vlhova (SVK) proved to be the most consistent woman claiming the Overall World Cup.
Lara Gut (SUI) had an incredible comeback season, finishing runner-up in the fight for the Overall title and conquering the Super-G globe. Katharina Liensberger (AUT) celebrated an incredible season with the slalom title, her first World Cup victory and two gold medals at the 2021 Cortina World Championships, while Marta Bassino (ITA) proved to be the best giant slalom skier out there. Italian teammate Sofia Goggia, was crowned with the Downhill title, despite an injury that kept her away from competition for over a month.
Despite failing to secure any globes this season, Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) can also be proud of a very strong return to the racing slopes.
Among the men, Alexis Pinturault (FRA) won a breathtaking duel with Marco Odermatt (SUI) to finish on top in both the Giant Slalom and the Overall standings. Slalom was definitely one of the most exciting disciplines with seven different athletes to win a race and Marco Schwarz securing the leadership in the standings already before the finals in Lenzerheide. In the speed disciplines, an outstanding Beat Feuz (SUI) secured his fourth consecutive Downhill World Cup, while Vincent Kriechmayr (AUT), after claiming two gold medals in Cortina, finished on top in the Super-G standings to bring home his first globe ever.
