Beijing 2022: Women’s alpine combined preview
Feb 17, 2022·Alpine SkiingIn a small field of 26 racers, all is up for the taking in tomorrow’s women’s alpine combined. Being the last women’s event ahead of the mixed team parallel race, athletes give everything they can in one of their last chances to claim an Olympic medal.
Reigning alpine combined Olympic champion, Michelle Gisin (SUI) is back to defend her title. Having already won bronze in the Olympic Super G and placed 6th in the Olympic slalom, Gisin is looking like one of the favourites for tomorrow’s race.
Swiss compatriot, Wendy Holdener, is no stranger to an Olympic podium after already having four to her name. In 2018, she placed 2nd in the slalom, 3rd in the alpine combined and 1st in the team parallel. Holdener has already claimed a bronze medal in the women’s slalom race during these Olympics.
2018 Olympic alpine combined silver medallist and 2021 alpine combined World Champion, Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) will be also having a go at claiming gold. After not having the easiest start to her 2022 Olympic journey, Shiffrin found her feet and placed 9th in the women’s Super G and then 18th in the women’s downhill. Tomorrow will be her last chance to win a medal unless she competes in Saturday’s mixed team parallel event.
The Italian trio, Elena Curtoni, Marta Bassino and Federica Brignone, all will be competing in tomorrow’s race to win an Olympic medal. Out of the three, Brignone is the only one to have placed on a podium during these Olympics after finishing 2nd in the women’s GS race. Bassino’s best result was 17th in the Super G whilst Curtoni’s was 5th in the downhill.
Racing is scheduled to start tomorrow with the downhill at 10:30 local time / 3:30 CET and then the slalom at 14:00 local time / 7:00 CET.
