Day 05 - FIS Alpine World Junior Championships in Panorama 2022
Mar 08, 2022·Alpine SkiingIn an exciting mixed team action today, the Canadians took home the victory in a heated parallel head-to-head.
The victory of the Canadians (Cassidy Gray, Etienne Mazellier, Justine Lamontagne and Raphaël Lessard) was hard-fought after they were able to beat the Austrian team around the so far three-time medallist (Magdalena Egger, Victoria Olivier, Joshua Sturm, Lukas Passrugger) in the grand final and Italy earlier in the quarter final only by 0.08 seconds.
Austria, in turn, clearly defeated Switzerland in the semi-final, although the Swiss team (Reto Mächler, Eric Wyler, Delia Durrer, Delphine Darbellay) won the bronze medal thanks to an improved performance in the small final against the up-and-coming American team at this Junior World Championships in Panorama.
Changing conditions in a very fair and even parallel race, challenged all racers to continually adapt as the short, 16-gate course moved from sunshine to shade.
The victory was hard fought in each round, with the Canadians narrowly edging out the Italians in the quarter finals by only 0.08, and a North American showdown in the semi-finals against the American team which has been a dominant force in the individual events.
Skiing is an individual sport. However, the team event adds a unique dynamic to ski racing, which is a typically individual sport. The FIS Junior World Ski Championships action continues tomorrow, March 8, with the men’s giant slalom and women’s slalom events. You can watch the event via live-streaming here:
