The first day of competition began on the Avet de Soldeu slope, with the men’s slalom. The protagonist of the day was the Norwegian Alexander Steen Olsen, who takes today’s victory and managed to win the European Cup (EC) overall title in slalom, after becoming double World Junior Champion in slalom and giant slalom last week in Panorama (CAN). Alexander led the race by -1.51sec and a final time of 1:45.11.

Noel Von Gruenigen (SUI), who was leading the EC ranking until the very last race, was unable to complete the first leg and skied out in the very last section. This fact has put him in 2nd place in the slalom EC overall.

The second classified of the slalom race in Andorra has been the Spanish Joaquim Salarich, with a time of 1:46.62, which is his best result in this year's European Cup, finishing in 7th position overall. The podium of the race was completed by the Austrian Joshua Sturm in third, who achieved a time of 1:46.63.

After the race, the Spaniard Joaquim Salarich explained his feelings:

"We knew that with the number 29, the second run would be more complicated than the first one. I'm very happy to get my best European Cup place here in Andorra, close to home, so I only have words of thanks to the whole organisation, to Andorra and to everyone. Now my focus is on the World Cup Finals in France and to give it all. I’m very motivated to push hard with my latest results."Joaquim Salarich (ESP)

Alexander Steen Olsen was very satisfied with his performance as well:

"I saw that I could win the general classification and I was lucky that it turned out that way. I know it was tough after the snowstorm, but you guys did a great job and you found the best possible way to get the track ready".Alexander Steen Olsen (NOR)

Finally, the podium of the EC overall slalom classification was completed with the third place of the German Fabian Himmelsbach, who finished 15th in the race today.

Tomorrow Grandvalira will host the women's downhill events on the piste Àliga and the men's giant slalom on the Avet piste. The downhill race is scheduled to start at 8:45am and the giant slalom at 8:30am or 11:00 depending on the slope conditions.
