Third Time's the Charm for Suter

What a weekend for Corinne Suter (SUI) at Lake Louise. After a second and third place finish in the two downhill races this weekend, Suter finally topped the podium in Sunday’s super-G.

Racing from the 13th bib start, Suter put together an impressive run to pace the field at 1:20.75.

Cornelia Huetter (AUT) came across a mere 0.02 seconds behind for second place. Ragnhild Mowinckel (NOR) put together a great run for a surprising third.

Suter knows close margins of victory will be a constant this season.

“You have to go and find your limit. I think this season will be a very, very tight season. There are so many girls who are skiing so fast and can win. You have to push in each race,” said Suter.

The Swiss skier had a good feeling about the super-G before it even started.

“I just try to ski my best. I knew it was a very good course that I liked after inspection. I was thinking it was faster and I just tried to do my best. It was a tight race again but today I was the lucky one,” said Suter.

The win for Suter gives her five World Cup wins, three in downhill and two in super-G. It is her 22nd career World Cup podium.

Suter moves to third in the overall standings behind Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) and Sofia Goggia (ITA).

Goggia had a shaky start at the top of the course but cleaned up the finish for fifth place at Lake Louise on Sunday. She falls short of capturing her second-career treble at Lake Louise after winning both downhills this weekend.

Huetter also put together great results in Canada this weekend. The Austrian made the podium in the first downhill race before being a late scratch in the second downhill due to concussion-related symptoms.

Those symptoms were no joke.

“After my concussion in Crans-Montana, I had a few days with my eyes and my brain. I don’t know how to describe it, it was like they are not connected. The feeling of my eyes is slow to my brain,” said Huetter.

Those headaches did not slow her down on Sunday as she almost took the top spot in the super-G.

“Today I felt much better. Yesterday I had the afternoon and day off. I had a few hours of quiet and not hurried like it is here when we are skiing. I think it was a good decision (to skip the second downhill race),” said Huetter.

Mowinckel set the early pace with a time of 1:20.91. It is the tenth career World Cup podium for the Norwegian, and her first this season. Five of those podiums have come in super-G, including her win at Courchevel last season.

“It is always fun to end the season how I did last year, that was insane and so cool. It is really hard to keep it up and continue where you left off. The training has been good but the race is always different, so it is nice to get one in the books and to see that my skiing is still there,” said Mowinckel.

Mowinckel knew today was her day to shine after struggling a bit earlier in the weekend.

“I am super happy. I am really happy with my skiing. I tried to push it. Coming out of the downhills, I never figured them out and I always think they’re hard. In super-G I have a good feeling and I felt like I did a good job today,” said Mowinckel.

Elsewhere on the slope, Lara Gut-Behrami (SUI) missed a gate resulting in a disappointing DNF. Nina Ortlieb (AUT) suffered the same fate after placing second in the downhill on Saturday.

Mirjam Puchner (AUT) just missed the podium in fourth.
