Women's super-G races in Val di Fassa cancelled

Both scheduled women's World Cup super-G races in the Italian resort of Val di Fassa have been cancelled this weekend due to excessive snowfall.

"Yesterday we got this huge amount of snow and then (we did) great work yesterday during the whole day," FIS Chief Race Director Alpine Women Peter Gerdol said on Sunday.

"And then again we got 15 centimetres of snow (on Saturday night) that isolated the lower layer. This snow was cleaned actually but the lower layer suffered too much and it was not hard enough and not safe enough.

"The crew was outside (last night) at 4 o'clock working but it was still not enough."

The possibility of holding one of the races on Monday was considered, but it was deemed to be impractical.

"This was discussed before but of course we are in high season, peak season here in the Dolomites," Gerdol said. "And due to accommodation and due to the travel and flights from the teams for Scandinavia over the next days, this was not possible."

Given how late it is in the season, the races will not be replaced.

"Because of the packed calendar and all these different reasons that happened during this season, the decision was not to replace any more (races)," Gerdol said.

The women's World Cup tour is scheduled to resume next weekend in the Norwegian resort of Kvitfjell with a downhill and super-G race.
