Austrian ski star Marco Schwarz addressed the media in a recent press conference, reflecting on his challenging journey over the past months. Despite multiple setbacks, he remains optimistic and determined to regain his best form.

Schwarz injured his knee in December 2023 during the downhill race in Bormio. After months of intensive rehabilitation, he made his comeback on snow and was eager to rejoin the team. However, just before flying to Chile, he experienced severe back pain, which was diagnosed as a herniated disc. The condition worsened, forcing him to undergo surgery and further delaying his return to skiing.

During the press conference, Schwarz described how the back injury disrupted his plans to train with the team in Chile.

I felt great with my knee and was excited to join the team. My bags were packed, but then I felt pain in my back, which eventually spread to my kneeMarco Schwarz

On his physiotherapist’s advice, he underwent an MRI that confirmed the severity of the issue. Despite attempts at conservative treatment, the pain intensified, eventually reaching his toes and making surgery unavoidable.

Following the surgery, Schwarz’s focus has been on recovery, with an emphasis on short training sessions and extensive rest. While he hopes to return to the snow in Austria by the end of October, he is cautious about committing to a World Cup comeback

I’d love to be back racing, but it’s too soon to say. The key is to ensure my body is fully readyMarco Schwarz

When asked about the competition, Schwarz emphasized that his primary focus is on his own progress.

I concentrate on myself. It’s great if others are in shape, but my priority is to get back to my bestMarci Schwarz

Despite being sidelined for seven months, followed by another injury, he has maintained a positive outlook.

It’s tough, but I’ve never had a breakdown. I try to stay positive in every momentMarco Schwarz

Although unable to train with his team in Chile, Schwarz stayed in close contact, supporting them remotely. Looking ahead, he is excited about the upcoming World Championships at home but acknowledges that his primary focus is on recovery.

It’s a goal I’m looking forward to, but there are many steps to take before thenMarco Schwarz

Reflecting on his journey, Schwarz remains philosophical and acknowledges the learning process that comes with such challenges.

In life, we always learn. Maybe I should have rested a bit more, but it’s easy to say in hindsightMarco Schwarz

For now, Schwarz’s long-term goal is to compete in all disciplines again.

I want to find the shape and level I had before these injuriesMarco Schwarz
