Daniel Weis ends career

Alpine snowboarder Daniel Weis has announced to call it the quits after eight years on tour. The long-time Snowboard Germany athlete justifies his step back from competitive sport with the poor chance of making the Olympic team for PyeongChang 2018.
“Last year I lost my status as World Cup team member. I then tried to put myself forward for the team again by competing in the Europa Cup but my fourth disc prolapse did throw me back again.
Although I was back on snow only four weeks later, I couldn't lock in the mandatory top-3 results I needed in order to make the A squad again and to hit the road to PyeongChang. As a result, I decided to end my career.”
The 28-year-old is looking back on a total of 31 World Cup starts of which an eighth rank finish in the parallel slalom race in Moscow back in 2013 was his best result. In addition, he represented his country in both alpine snowboarding events at the 2015 FIS Snowboard World Championships.
“Those were definitive the highlights of my career. I'm very proud on this eighth rank finish and that I made it in the knock out rounds in the parallel slalom of the World Championships.”
Despite his retirement, Weis won't fully leave the world of snowboarding. The PGS Gold medallist of the 2015 Winter Universiade will take over the role as Head Coach of the Austrian Europa Cup team on September 1:
“The job offer came in while I was thinking of a possible retirement. Following some careful considerations, I accepted the offer, and I'm looking forward to meet new challenges.”
