Kosir's dreamlike comeback

It's simply true: some stories can only be written by life. The latest one took place last Saturday when Slovenia's most successful snowboarder of the past years celebrated a long-anticipated comeback from injury with a great showing in his home soil event at Rogla placing third.

The two-time medallist Olympic medallist from Trciz had been sidelined from action for more than one and a half seasons due to ongoing severe back problems.

With his last race dating back to the 2015 World Cup finals in Winterberg (GER), where he finished in fifth position taking home all three World Cu titles (pgs, psl and alpine overall), the 32-year-old finally came back to business – with his fellow countrymen's pinning high hopes on him.

But although he had trained quite a bit on the Jasa slope in the lead-up to the Rogla parallel giant slalom event, the 2015 pgs world championships silver medallist played it cool.

“I know everyone was expecting much but I didn't”.

This understatement approach worked out fine for Kosir who didn't know where he was standing in a stacked field of international talents with the lack of racing given. However, it just made the outcome even better.

“I'm really glad that I was able to race here on my home slope as it's my favourite race. I'm happy that I was able to have such a great comeback,“ said Kosir after beating Austria's Andreas Prommegger in the battle for third by only 0.08 seconds.

“I noticed that I can still go head to head with the others although I'm physically still far away from how I felt in my best seasons.”

Nevertheless, it didn't really prevent him from finishing first in the Rogla qualifiers.

“If I do it smart, I still can race some good races which is my goal,” Kosir added before also stating that he isn't sure yet if he will continue during this season.

“I have to see how my body reacts when I calm down. I have to make a rational decision on this which is not based on an adrenaline flush coming from a podium result. I have to take care of my body and health.”

Kosir on track again - direction PyeongChang 2018?

Especially as the carving specialist still has something in mind:

“I want to compete in the next Olympics. That is my biggest dream which I work for.”
