Russia takes four of six medals in Rogla junior worlds PGS

Rogla (SLO) - It was another dominant junior world championships performance for the Russian squad on Tuesday, as the nation who had won 16 of the past 20 junior world championship alpine snowboard gold medals added another two to that total with wins by Anastasia Kurochkina and Dmitry Loginov in parallel giant slalom action in Rogla (SLO).
The Russian ladies have won every junior world championships PGS gold dating back to the Chiesa in Valmalenco 2014 edition of the event, and on Tuesday that streak kept right on track with Koruchkina’s performance.
And, with Kurochkina lined up alongside her teammate Sofia Nadyrshina in the big final, there was never even a doubt about whether or not the Russian’s streak would continue, only a question as to who would carry the mantel.
As it turned out, it would be Kurochkina by the barest of margins, as the 18-year-old was able to edge her 15-year-old compatriot Nadyrshina by .02 seconds to take the gold, while Nadyrshina would take junior world championships silver in just her fourth international competition across all categories.
Third place on the day went to Italy’s Jasmin Coratti, as she was able to best Japan’s Tsubaki Miki by .08 seconds in the small final to earn her first piece of junior world champs hardware.
Over on the men’s side, 19-year-old Loginov continued a remarkable year that saw him first win double junior world champs gold at the Cardrona 2018 PGS and PSL competitions back in September, before winning double gold at the Utah 2019 world championships in February (becoming the first rider in history to hold all four of those gold medals at the same time), and now winning the first of a possible three gold medals here in Rogla.
It was Germany’s Elias Huber who had the unlucky task of facing down Loginov in the big final on Tuesday, and though the Huber battled hard, he was no match for his Russian competitor, with Loginov crossing the line nearly a second out front for his fourth career junior world championships gold, and his sixth total JWC medal.
Tuesday’s small final was another all-Russia showdown, as Iaroslav Stepanko and Ilia Vitugov squared off in a battle for the bronze, with Stepanko walking away victorious after besting his teammate by .26 seconds, giving the Russia squad a hugely impressive four out of a possible six medals on the day.
Action in Rogla continues on Wednesday with parallel slalom competition, before the 2019 FIS alpine snowboard junior world championships conclude on Thursday with the mixed team event. Live streaming of all competition phases will be available HERE.
