CAREER

Andy Newell has brought a new style and excitement to cross country skiing, pushing an action sports image for his sport and recording the best U.S. men’s results since the era of his childhood hero Bill Koch. As a junior a decade ago, Newell was ranked among the top sprinters in the world. He began building experience and confidence and went on to post the best American results internationally—including the first U.S. podium in more than two decades in 2006. After strong seasons in 2010 and ’11, Newell ran into misfortune with crashes in the always risky sprint events in 2012, but still managed a pair of top 10 World Cup finishes. In his career, he has recorded seven top five World Cups including three podiums

PERSONAL

Newell was skiing by 3, racing by 5 and hasn't stopped since. After moving through Stratton Mountain School and its well-respected cross-country program, he produced top-10 results at Junior Worlds as a teenager. He was top-10 in the sprint at Junior Worlds for three straight years, '01-03. He won his first Continental Cup race, a sprint, at Silver Star, BC, in November 2001 and moved on to clinch a team spot at his first Olympics.
When Newell’s not training or competing he’s hanging with buddies, skateboarding, surfing and working as a carpenter on his cabin in Vermont. “As a true adrenaline junky I’m always looking to push the limits in outdoor activity and go fast whether it's on a surfboard, roller skis, or on my 1970 Triumph motorcycle.” Newell is also passionate about pushing cross-country skiing forward in the U.S. and works with kids and the New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) to introduce the sport to a new audience.
