Bolshunov wins Oberstdorfs Skiathlon in great finish sprint
Jan 25, 2020·Cross-CountryThe new course setting of Oberstdorf was genuinely tested during todays mens Skiathlon. The diverse but tough track saw Alexander Bolshunov racing to his 10th victory of an individual distance competition.
The competitive field kept the tactical competition spectacular all the way to the finish line. The first part on the classic tracks was led by Iivo Niskanen from Finland who went for the Bonus Points in the second lap but then had to give way to the strong Norwegian successors with Sundby, Holund, Roethe and Krüger. Niskanen fell slightly behind and continued the catching of the leading group with Swiss Dario Cologna.
Back on the Skating skis, they managed to close the gap again and the front-runners consisted of seven athletes. The competition remained undecided until the final uphill before re-entering the stadium where Alexander Bolshunov made use of his sprinting skills and set out for the top spot. Simen Hegstad Krüger reacted immediately and Sjur Roethe was on the catch. The two Norwegians cross the finish line +0.9 seconds and +1.2 seconds after Bolshunov, taking the second and third spot., just before Sundby and Holund.
