From 15th to 23rd February 2020 a new product is listed on the FIS Cross-Country calendar, the Ski Tour 2020. The organizers have announced remarkable changes to classic tour formats, focussing on sustainable and environmental friendly aspects. Especially the logistics stand out as all athletes will be obliged to travel by train. Additionally, for the first time ever in the history of FIS Cross-Country, a World Cup race will cross international boarders as the fourth stage of Ski Tour 2020 goes from Storlien in Sweden to Meråker in Norway. The tour includes stages in Östersund (SWE), Åre (SWE), Storlien (SWE), Meråker (NOR) and Trondheim (NOR).
In September, the FIS Cross-Country team met up with the organizers and the national broadcasters SVT (Sweden) and NRK (Norway) for the inspection of the planned stages. Race formats were confirmed previousely and according to the calendar, the course and event planning was put together by the team. The cooperation between the two countries and FIS but also the leading thought of presenting environmental friendly solutions were the key points to include.
Besides exciting World Cup stages, the Tour de Ski over new years and the North American in March, the tour in Scandinavia will be one of the highlights this upcoming season for many athletes. The tour is foreseen to be held every fourth year in between Nordic World Ski Championships.
