Therese Johaug soars up the FINAL CLIMB to her 3rd Tour de Ski Overall victory
Jan 05, 2020·Cross-CountryAs seventh and final stage, the 14th edition of the prestigious Tour de Ski led the 41 female contenders once more on top of the famous Alpe Cermis. For the first time, the race was set as a mass start where the racers had to tackle a 2.5km loop before heading towards the climb.
After 2.5km Anamarija Lampic from Slovenia secured herself the bonus points and thus also the Tour de Ski point victory. „It was never in my mind that I will win the red bib in the Tour de Ski and I am very proud to have achieved that. The two wins in the Sprint showed me that I am really a good sprinter so I hope that I can go on like that until the end of the season. Today with the red bib, I wanted to push myself for sure for the first points after 2.5km and then I just stepped away and let the other girls go for it."
For the narrow stretch towards the climb, Overall Tour leader Therese Johaug from Norway took over the lead and had her eyes all set on the Alpe Cermis. The Norwegian once more impressively performed a powerful climb along the cheering crowd.
Second to cross the finish line at Alpe Cermis is Heidi Weng from Norway, 50.3 seconds after Johaug and 4.2 seconds before Ingvild Flugstad Østberg. Natalia Nepryaeva from Russia takes the 4th rank of the day but makes up her seconds and thus winning the second rank in the Overall Tour ranking, 1:11 minute after Johaug who wins her 3rd Overall Tour de Ski title. The winner of last years Tour de Ski, Ingvild Flugstad Østberg takes the third spot with a gap of 1:17 minute to Johaug.
