Not only the frosty cold temperatures at around -18°C gave the spectators at todays women’s 10km C the shivers, but also the fight for the podium spots. The two favored frontrunners, Frida Karlsson from Sweden and Therese Johaug from Norway, delivered a tight race. Therese Johaug had won every Distance World Cup opener in Ruka of the last three years but this year, Frida Karlsson prevailed and kept the lead throughout the competition only by a few seconds. In the second lap of the 5km loop, Therese Johaug lost pace and thus, Karlsson crossed the finish line with a final margin of 13.7 seconds.

“I am super happy and I felt really strong today. I had the control from the start. Having a season start like this is exciting in an Olympic season!”Frida Karlsson

With a third place and thus a direct qualification for the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing 2022, Katharina Hennig from Germany starts into her World Cup season in top shape. The 25 year-old crossed the finish line only 1.5 seconds behind Johaug and claimed her first ever World Cup podium in an individual start.

“My coach told me that I am only 4 seconds behind Therese when heading back into the stadium and I just could not believe it. It still feels unreal that I managed so well, especially in the cold. It’s hard to describe what this top result means to me.”Katharina Hennig
