The first competition day of the FIS Junior and U23 World Ski Championships belonged to the Junior Distance skiers. With a 15km respectively 30km Mass Start in free technique, the long courses around Lygna Skisenter (NOR) were tested.

Germany took the top spot in the first race of the Women’s category. Helen Hoffman got some crucial space between herself and the competitors in the last hill before the finish and won the race 2,6 seconds ahead of the Swedish Lisa Eriksson.

The host country got the bronze medal with Tuva Anine Brusveen-Jensen, who finished 8,2 seconds behind Hoffmann.

"I’m very happy about the gold medal and that I was able to get some space in the last hill at the stadium. This was hard. The tracks here at Lygna are the toughest I’ve ever competed in."Helen Hoffmann

The young German finished third at last year’s Mass Start competition at the FIS Junior World Ski Championships.

The Norwegian Tuva Anine Brusveen-Jensen was also very happy.

"I’m really proud of this performance, and it’s one of the best races I’ve done. It means a lot to get a World Championship medal," she says.

The Men's 30km Mst F race ended with a Russian dominance. All top-4 athletes were from the young Russian team - but especially the top-3 out-raced the field of totally 75 contenders. On the fourth 5km-loop of the 30km race, the trio picked up the speed and never looked back.

Alexander Ivshin won the gold medal in front of his team mates Saveliy Korostelev and Nikita Denisov. Korostelev and Denisov crossed the finish line 8 and 12 seconds behind Ivshin.

Nikita Rodionov, also from Russian, took the fourth place in the race, while Xavier McKeever from Canada and Norwegian Henrik Kvennaas took home the fifth and sixth place.

"It was a great race and everything felt good today", said the gold medalist Ivshin. He also won the classic mass start in last year’s FIS Junior World Ski Championships.
