The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) successfully conducted its comprehensive site and race course inspection in preparation for the highly anticipated Loppet Cup, a COOP FIS Cross Country World Cup event, scheduled to take place in Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis, Minnesota February 17-18, 2024. It is the first time the United States has hosted a cross country World Cup in more than 20 years.

The FIS inspection team, comprised of technical experts in ski course design, safety and event management, visited the vibrant city of Minneapolis from June 12-14. Their primary objective was to assess the suitability and readiness of the race venue to host world-class athletes and provide an exceptional experience for both spectators and participants.

The inspection encompassed an in-depth analysis of key factors, including the design of the race course and infrastructure. The FIS team worked closely with the host, the Loppet Foundation, and U.S. Ski & Snowboard, to share their recommendations to ensure the event adheres to international standards and guarantees a memorable competition for all involved.

The Loppet Foundation, a unique non-profit in Minneapolis, known for its promotion of outdoor activities for all, was chosen as a host venue due to its creation of an exceptional cross country ski trail system at Wirth Park and its partnership with the city of Minneapolis commitment to promoting winter sports. The event will showcase the city’s urban trail system and the Loppet Foundation’s efforts to make outdoor recreation accessible to all.

“The Loppet Foundation is thrilled to welcome the world to Wirth Park”Claire Wilson, Executive Director.

“And to showcase how a stellar trail system in the heart of Minneapolis can be not only a place where all ages and abilities learn to ski and love the outdoors - but also where the world’s greatest athletes compete on an International stage.”

"We are pleased with the progress and preparations made for the World Cup in Minneapolis," said Michal Lamplot, FIS Cross Country Race Director..
