Mourning has struck the world of winter sports and the Alpine Ski World Cup.  At the end of a severe illness, Elena Fanchini, the Italian champion who retired from competition in 2017, passed away at her home in Solato at the age of just 37. Elena Fanchini won the silver medal at the World Championships in Santa Caterina Valfurva in 2005 at the age of 20, behind Janica Kostelic (CRO). She took part in six World Championships and three Olympic Games. In the World Cup, she won two downhill races in Lake Louise in 2005 and Cortina in 2015 and a total of four podiums.

FIS expresses its deepest condolences to the Fanchini family and the Italian Winter Sports Federation.
