It was a clear victory for World Cup top runner Ebba Andersson (SWE) in individual over 10 kilometers classic of the U-23 World Championships. Marte Maehlum Johansen (NOR) won second place ahead of Emma Ribom (SWE) through an ambitious final lap. Sergey Ardashev (RUS) won with a lead of over a minute, ahead of Harald Oestberg Amundsen (NOR) and the Frenchman Hugo Lapalus.

Ebba Andersson had splendidly divided the forces in her victory run. It increased continuously and continued to expand her lead. In the end, it was 24.8 seconds to second-placed Johansen: “I really had to make an effort. Emma was really strong at the beginning. So I knew I had to accelerate. But it was pretty tough. At the finish I was totally exhausted. ”After the World Junior Championships, the Swede would like to return to the World Cup circus and prove herself again.

The distance competitions seem to be the field of expertise for the Norwegian Marte Maelhum Johansen. Already in 2016 and 2017 she won precious metal at the Junior World Championships. “I haven't been in great shape so far despite having to deal with injuries last fall. But today I gave everything. I had great skis and the necessary motivation and ended up passing Emma. ”

For a long time Emma Ribom (SWE) was on aligned with her teammate and the individual winner, Ebba Andersson. In the last round she could not continue her start time. She lost a lot of time in the last kilometer and had to give up at the end of the Norwegian Johansen. “The conditions were not easy today. I really had to work very hard for this medal. It was a bit slippery out there when the snow fell a bit, but I did it and I'm very happy about the medal, ” concludes the Swede.

In the mens competition, the Russian Sergey Ardashev could not have shown his strengths more clearly. In the men's 15 km C, he crossed the line with a lead of over a minute and clearly left his teammates behind: “I felt really good today. I had taken the leading position from the start and was able to improve from lap to lap. My skis were great. Everything was just fine today. ”

For the Norwegian Harald Oestberg Amundsen, it is already the second medal he is taking home from Oberwiesenthal. He took third place in the sprint and was now able to improve to second place with the second medal: “I really wanted to finish in the top six. I'm actually more of a sprinter, so it was particularly surprising for me that I was able to run second in the endurance race. The atmosphere in Oberwiesenthal is great. It's really fun here”.

Janosch Brugger (GER) and Hugo Lapalus (FRA) fought an exciting battle for third place. They only crossed the finish line 4.5 seconds apart. The Sprint Junior World Champion of 2017 just missed his first medal in the U23 World Cup. "My trainers informed me on the track that I was in third place and I had nothing left to lose," said the Frenchman Lapalus. "The conditions were not easy today, but it suits me and I am very happy about this medal because it is my first in this round."

On Wednesday, there will be plenty of highlights for the athletes and spectators of the JWSC 2020: The day starts with the freestyle mass start of the juniors over 15 km at 10:00 CET and 12:00 CET, the juniors start in the freestyle mass start over 30 km.
