Martin Johnsrud Sundby ends professional athletes career

With the retirement of Martin Johnsrud Sundby, the Cross-Country world sees one of the most striking athletes of the last generation leave the World Cup cirquit. In the 16 years since his first World Cup appearance, Sundby has celebrated successes on all major sporting stages of Cross-Country skiing. With two Olympic gold, two silver and one bronze medal, four World Championship victories, three silver and two bronze medals as well as 30 World Cup wins and numerous podium spots Martin became one of the most decorated Cross-Country athletes of our time.

Martin Johnsrud Sundby has influenced and developed the performances of a distance skier of his generation and has inspired a great field of younger skiers. The distance expert who has won the Overall and Distance World Cup multiple times, has been a valuable athlete along the World Cup with his expertise and experience and has also taken over his responsibility as a team captain of the Norwegian team for many years.

Despite many high’s and low’s in his career, including chronical back pain that has been with him for a long time, the now 36 year-old gave himself completely to his professional Cross-Country career.
