A busy schedule awaited in Lygna’s Skicenter on the final day of the FIS Junior and U23 World Ski Championships. The skiers of the Junior category had Sprint races in Free technique on the menu and the U23 skiers raced in the mixed Relay.

Junior Sprint F

Maria Hartz Melling from Norway was looking strong throughout the day. Upon taking the lead in the finals, Swede Maerta Rosenberg challenged her but could not come past Melling’s heels. The Bronze medal took Elizaveta Bekisheva despite a fall in the last uphill.

With ranks 4 to 6 going to Italy, USA and the Czech Republic, the top-6 were represented by six different nations.

The Men’s final was quite dramatic when it also came to a showdown between Norwegian Johannes Lønnestad Flaaten and Swede Edvin Anger. Both raced side by side but in the final uphill, Anger got hooked. He managed to hold his position but fell in the last downhill. Thus, the way was free for Flaaten to take the victory on home ground and was very happy about it: “It feels good to win at home. It ended up being a high speed race from the start to the finals but I kept my focus.”

Due to the fall, the way was also freed for Italian Elia Barp who had worked hard for the silver medal. “I did not expect to race for a medal at those Championships, so this is extremely great for me,” said the silver medalist. The final spot on the podium went to Aleksander Eide Holmboe from Norway.

U23 Mixed Relay

At the final race of the FIS Junior and U23 World Ski Championships 2022, the Mixed Relay of the U23 categories took place. Team Norway with Kristin Austgulen Fosnaes, Mari Folkvord, Håvard Moseby and Andreas Fjorden Ree brought home the Gold medal in the Relay. The team pulled out of the successor group in the final leg and won by 7.5 seconds. The French Team with Eve Ondine Duchaufour, Melissa Gal, Theo Schely and Jules Chappaz took the silver medal and the anchor of the team, Eve Ondine Duchaufour stated: “It’s crazy to get a silver medal. The team gave me good starting point that I managed to keep. We are such a great team and are super happy for the whole team on site.”

The Bronze medal went to Team Russia with Olympic medalist Veronika Stepanova. Along with Anastasiya Faleeva, Ivan Gorbunov and Denis Filimonov, Stepanova concluded the success with thanks to the organizers for fantastic events in Lygna.
