It’s ‘all systems go’ for the season-opening FIS Freeski slopestyle World Cup Stubai (AUT) after a preliminary team captains’ meeting took place between local organisers, FIS officials and national team leaders online on Friday.

The Stubai competition, slated to take place from 20-21 November, 2020, cleared a massive hurdle earlier this week when the Austrian government declared that elite-level sporting events such as FIS World Cup events would be exempt from the latest four-week partial lockdown imposed on the country. With the go-ahead from the Austrian authorities, the local organizers in Stubai were able to redouble their efforts in preparing for a safe and successful slopestyle World Cup competition.

Leading Friday’s online meeting was Erich Flatscher, head of the organizing committee for Stubai, along with FIS contest directors Ritchie Date and Roberto Moresi. With a comprehensive overview of the covid-19 safety measures in place in Stubai from the accommodations, to transportation, to on-hill social distancing measures, as well as medical plan outlines and more, the hour-long meeting was a hugely positive step on the way to the beginning of the 2020/21 FIS Freestyle & Freeski World Cup season.

“FIS would like to thank Erich, OESV, and the venue in Stubai for ensuring that the FIS Freeski slopestyle World Cup Stubai would be included amongst the ‘elite’ level sporting events allowed to take place despite the latest lockdown restrictions in Austria,” said Moresi, “With the huge amount of work put in by the organising committee in Stubai to establish the various safety protocols and a ‘bubble’ environment for athletes, team staff, and all others on site, as well as the world-class slopestyle course that has been constructed by the builders from Schneestern and Stubai, we’re looking forward to opening the season with what promises to be a hugely successful competition.”

This season’s Stubai competition will mark the third time the FIS Freeski World Cup has visited the venue dubbed the 'Stubai Zoo,' and it will be the first visit since 2018/19, after last season’s event was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. With preliminary entry lists boasting a deep and impressive roster of the world’s best slopestyle skiers, alongside the painstaking work carried out by the deeply committed organizing committee, it appears all the pieces are in place for exciting show at the hotly-anticipated season opener.
