The Rundown - June 25, 2021
Jun 26, 2021·Freeski Park & PipeWe're a few days into summer in the northern hemisphere, so hopefully the sun is shining wherever you are in the world - especially if you're lucky enough to be on skis at this point.
With the countdown to the official start of summer now in the past, the sporting world is now counting down to the start of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which is set to get underway in just four weeks in Japan. With the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games comin up six-ish months after the Tokyo Games, we'll all be watching closely to see how the greatest event in sports plays out in this new reality.
All of which is a bit of a preamble to the biggest news of this week, as athletes and fans around the world celebrated Olympic Day 2021 on Wednesday by sharing some of their fondest Olympic memories and hopes for the future. For us, that meant revisiting some epic ski cross shots from the past three OWGs...
While for our Olympic athletes that meant looking back at some incredible Olympic moments that they got to be a part of, like when Justine and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe became just the fourth set of siblings in the history of the Games to stand on an Olympic podium together at Sochi 2014...
Whether or not we'll see the stadiums packed full of fans that we're used to at the Olympics coming up next season in Beijing, the athletes know that the pressure will be sky-high as the eyes of millions around the world will be watching through their screens. With that in mind, Britt Cox has upped her water ramp training regimen to get more of that competition vibe, allowing some highly-critical fans into the facility to see if she's still got the nerves to perform in those pressure-cooker situations...
Last weekend we ran our latest set of polls on Instagram, with the fans voting on their favourite women's and men's aerials jumps from this past season. Zhanbota Aldaberganova earned the win on the women's side with her lay, tuck, full on home soil in Shymbulak, while crystal globe winner Maxim Burov and his full, double full, full from his own home soil event in Yaroslavl was your winner on the men's side of things...
Time to check in on the freeski side of things where, as it turns out, the competition season ain't over yet.
Over in Denmark the Scandanvian Team Battle is set to go down on Sunday, with two-rider national teams set to duke it out on the iconic CopenHill dryslope in downtown Copenhagen. While we know every one of these skiers on hand is going to blow some minds on Sunday, we're guessing the GBR team of Woodsy and Chris McCormick might have the dryslope advantage...
Stoked to see the man, the myth, the legend, and the Sochi 2014 slopestyle gold medallist Joss Christensen on site there in Copenhagen and throwing down with his inimitable style...
Speaking of inimitable style, Nico Porteous has put the surfboard away and is back on the planks in Mt. Hood, doing his thing all over the dang place...
Birk Irving is not in Hood yet, but he will be soon and we're looking forward to plenty more of this goodness from US pipe slayer...
Anytime you put Colby Stevensen and Mr. Hotlaps together, you can bet your bottom dollar we'll be celebrating the occassion with a little Rundown recognition...
We'll finish off the followcam section here with a little throwback goodness from Cocone Kondo, gettin' hers in Haikuba a few months ago...
Last week we posted an absolute banger of a drone shot from Vincent Veile at Prime Park, and this week we're happy to share another beauty with you. Vince is really coming through with the hits lately...
Did we hear somebody ask if we had any "stomped left 810 out" content this week? Because hey guess what, you are in LUCK, friendo...
Freestyle Canada is daydreaming of those days when the whole squad was on site at Sunshine Village a few weeks ago and Teal Harle was straight vibing in some perfect spring conditions...
Speaking of vibing, it's looking like Dominique Ohaco has it down to a science. The summer inspiration is pretty real here...
We'll wrap things up this week with a little "the floor is lava" action courtesy of German SX up-and-comer Ferdinand Dorsch, who put together a real solid take on the theme that Andri Ragettli has made so popular over the past couple of years. The slackline variations on this one have got our quads burning just watching...
That's it for this week, folks. Enjoy the weekend, and we'll see ya back here next time!
