Galysheva and Kingsbury on top in Calgary

Coming back after the holidays break, the first FIS Freestyle moguls World Cup of 2019 went down on Saturday in Calgary with Yulia Galysheva (KAZ) and Mikael Kingsbury (CAN) taking the wins at the iconic WinSport Canada Olympic Park.

It was the 10th consecutive time that the moguls World Cup was back in action in Calgary at the venue with one of the richest history in the freestyle skiing, where moguls made its Olympic debut back in 1988.

And you could feel the Olympic spirit all over the place with athletes pushing it to the limits all day long encouraged by enthusiastic fans cheering at the bottom of the course.

In the ladies' event Yulia Galysheva came on top of the ranking, showing consistent and solid skiing throughout the day and keeping her best run for the big final. It was the fourth World Cup victory for Galysheva and her first top spot in the 2018/2019 season.

“It is a great start into the new season with the win here”, said Galysheva, “I like Calgary and skiing here and I’m super happy how it all turned out today. I'm looking froward to the next competition in Lake Placid.”

Second place on the day went to Perrine Laffont (FRA), while Jaelin Kauf (USA) rounded out the ladies podium in third.

Laffont also claimed back the yellow World Cup leader bib leading the way with 320 points after four competitions. Kauf is second in the ranking with 305 points, Galysheva sits in third with 290 points.

Switching over to the men’s event Mikael Kingsbury went for his fourth consecutive victory this season, prevailing yet once again on the course in Calgary. It was Kingsbury’s eight victory at Canada Olympic Park since he first topped the podium here in 2011.

Despite challenging conditions that saw some of the favourites struggling, Kingsbury dominated the competition from qualifications through to the super final, lifting his total World Cup wins up to 53.

“I’m four for four, so it’s a good start to the season, and it’s good because it gives me a chance to pull ahead in overall standings,” said Kingsbury. “But the best part is that I’m feeling better and better on my skis, which is cool.”

Walter Wallberg (SWE) finished the competition behind Kingsbury in second place for his second finish in top-3 this season.

The 2018 Olympic bronze medallist Daichi Hara was third on the day earning his career’s first ever World Cup podium.

In the moguls World Cup ranking Kingsbury sits comfortably in the first place with 400 points. Second in the standing Benjamin Cavet (FRA) has 230 point, while Wallberg with his second place finish in Calgary is now ranked third with 200 points.

The FIS Freestyle Ski moguls World Cup action continues next week in Lake Placid with the finals scheduled for Friday, January 18.
