Moguls King Mikael Kingsbury (CAN) has added another distinction to his impressive merit claiming the 78th Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s Athlete of the Year. The award, whose winners are decided by a panel of sports journalists from across the country, honours his achievement of winning the gold medal at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang (KOR).

It was Kingsbury’s first Olympic gold medal, but the 26-year-old has dominated the FIS World Cup moguls circuit since 2012. He took home two Crystal Globes at the end of the last World Cup season as the overall men’s freestyle points leader and overall men’s moguls leader. He kicked off the current season last week with a win in Ruka (FIN). It was his 50thcareer FIS World Cup victory.

“It is a great honour to receive this award. I have the greatest respect for the extraordinary athletes who have received it before me”, Kingsbury said. “It is with immense pride and much humility that I accept this award, which has paid tribute to numerous Olympians that have left their mark on the history of the Olympic Games and the world of Olympic sport.”

Other finalists included figure skater Kaetlyn Osmond, golfer Brooke Henderson, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid and curler Kaitlyn Lawes. Recent Lou Marsh recipients include Joey Votto (baseball), Penny Oleksiak (swimming), Carey Price (hockey), Kaillie Humphries (bobsleigh) and Jon Cornish (football).

The Lou Marsh Trophy has been awarded annually since 1936 with a three-year hiatus during the Second World War.
