The Freestyle Rundown - July 3, 2020
Jul 03, 2020·FreestyleWe're back with another Friday edition of the Freestyle Rundown, where once again we'll be looking back at a little of all that was fun, funny, weird and just plain good in the world of freestyle and freeski over the past seven days or so.
To get the ball rolling this week lets start off with our final #ClassicsLive throwback competition of the series, where we're revisiting the season finale of the 2008/09 aerials World Cup campaign in Moscow (RUS). Nighttime jumping in the Russian capital, with a huge crowd on hand to watch the great Xu Mengtao (CHN) take her maiden World Cup win and Lydia Lassila (AUS) take the crystal globe in ladies action, and Ryan St. Onge (USA) take the men's win while Steve Omischl would claim his third-straight crystal globe...lots of great stuff in this one.
Aerials do be looking a little bit different in the summer though, as the USA's Justin Schoenefeld illustrates by flying high over a sunny Park City earlier this. Fun fact - while Justin was 10 years old when the Moscow competition when down back in 2009, there's a pretty good chance he'll be competing against five or six athletes who were there in Russia...
Last week we asked - nay, DEMANDED - some footage from the French moguls team's training camp in Val d'Isere and this week the bump queen Perrine Laffont herself came through with the goods. We could watch this type of thing all day, and to be honest once this week's Rundown is published we might do just that...
Speaking of "the goods," up high on the glacier in France seems like the place to be for anyone seeking such "goods" at this stage in July. Team GB's Gerken Shofield fam just got over there for summer camp and coverage is looking incredible. Bummer about the hike though...it's a long march up to the glacier in Tignes.
Did someone say "march"?? Looks like there's a little more to basic training than just walking around in formation in the Swiss Army, as 2019/20 slopestyle crystal globe winner Andri Ragettli vividly demonstrates in this update from mandatory military summer camp. This is a wild one...
Not sure if Juho Kilkki is in the Finnish army, but he is extremely organized. Peep this ski-van dream set up, where Juho's basically got a rolling one-man footy-making factory...
Sebastian Schjerve's backyard setup ain't portable, but as far as fulfilling the "footy-factory" requirements goes it more than does the job. A pretty decent afternoon's worth of work here...
We all know about the endless wins, the records, the medals, the trophies, the speed, the focus, the fact that he has, undoubtably, at the age of 27 and still very, very much active, established himself as the greatest moguls skier of all time - but you know what we don't spend enough time talking about when it comes to Mikael Kingsbury? The style. Luckily we have this slo-mo water ramp clip to take a little time and really drink it all in.
The King can tweak.
While we're on the subject of style, here's Lukas Muellauer making pretty things happen on the knuckle in Kreischberg...
And a little more of that good style stuff from Canada's Max Moffatt, throwing it back to December at the Air + Style Beijing...
A couple of ski cross updates for you know, beginning with the Audi Ski Cross Tour, which just released their calendar for next season. If you're planning on being in Switzerland next winter, take note!
Some good news from Brady Leman's camp, as the reigning Olympic champ looks to be on the mend after a pretty serious mountain biking accident a couple of months ago. Ya love to see it...
And a little more action from Val d'Isere for you, as the French SX team is on site, on snow, and getting some solid some reps in...
And that about wraps it up for this week, but before we shut 'er down we'll direct you towards a little survey regarding the FISApp. If you're a user, why not head over here and take a couple minutes to answer some questions so we can improve it for next year? And if you're NOT a user, why not downloaded it now, take a poke around, and then come back here and fill out the survey then?
Thanks for reading and we'll see you again next week!
