It was a perfect start into 2022/23 moguls winter season this past Sunday at Hintertux glacier in Austria, as more than 30 athletes from eight countries competed in back-to-back FIS Open competitions.

This season the Austrian Ski Federation has moved its early-season training location from Soelden to Hintertux and in the last couple of weeks we saw multiple national teams heading to Austria’s third highest ski area to get ready for what shapes up to be a highly exciting season.

As Saturday’s first competition were postponed due to weather, two sets of women’s and men’s competitions took place on Sunday. This time the Mother Nature decided to play along with the organisers and athletes, providing a perfect background with blue skies and optimal snow conditions. Add with a perfectly prepared course, some dozens of up-and-coming skiers on hand and an action-packed programme, the competitions at Hintertux were truly an outstanding showcase of mogul skiing.

Starting on the women’s side it was the World Cup veteran Makayla Gerken Schofield (GBR), who took the win in the first competition ahead of second Katharina Ramsauer (AUT) and third Danielle Ung (CAN).

Moving to the second competition it was Hanna Wesse (GER), who stepped things up after crashing in the first event and landed a super solid run to take the win. Gerken Schofield and Ramsauer rounded out the podium in second and third, respectively, for their second top-3 finish on the day.

Switching to men’s competition it was Nicolas Wesse (GER), who stormed to his first FIS victory by taking top spot in the first event, while Mateo Jeannesson (GBR) clinched the victory in the second event.

Mats Desautels (CAN) showed some solid and consistent riding throughout the day and finish both competitions in second place.

Fyodor Bugakov (KAZ) and Marek Gajdecka (CZA) also impressed the judges on Sunday, with both skiers completing the podium in third, in the respective first and second competition of the day.
