Obertauern FIS Freestyle Junior World Championships - Results

This past week, the part of the 2023 FIS Freestyle Junior World Championships took place in  Austria’s Obertauern to officially wrap up what was a thrilling 2022/23 freestyle season. With the world’s best junior athletes on hand at Austria’s exceptional aerials venue and some outstanding sport battles, great emotions and remarkable performances, there is no doubt that the event in Obertauern was a highly successful one.

After hosting the aerials Europa Cup finals on March 25-26, the Austrian resort also host the most important event of the season for the upcoming stars of freestyle skiing on March 29-30 and it was the first time in history that JWSC in classic freestyle disciplines were staged in Austria.

The competition in Obertauern kicked off on Wednesday with the team mixed event and at the end of the day it was Team China with Liu Xuanchi, Wang Guochen and Chen Shuo in squad, who walked away victorious and claimed the gold medal.

After sitting in third after the first round of competition, the Chinese athletes stepped it up in the super final, increasing the level of difficulty on their jumps substantially, while also executing the jumps with perfect form and clean landings to finish the day with a total score of 262.22 points, scoring the first junior world championships medal for China since 2013.

Second place on the day went to USA represented by Amelia Glogowski, Ian Schoenwald and Connor Curran, who finished with 244.97 points, while Canada’s Charlie Fontaine, Anthony Noel and Victor Primeau rounded out the podium in third place with 244.53 points.

Moving on to Thursday’s individual competitions, once again China was unstoppable, claiming gold medals in both women’s and men’s events.

2022/23 Rookie of the Year Chen Meiting (CHN) was on fire all day long, leading the way from qualifications into finals and finishing the day with 82.21 points for her exceptional Full-Full to claim the gold medal.

Second place went to Liu Xuanchi (CHN), who received 78.75 points also for her Full-Full and claimed her second medal in Obertauern, while Amelia Glogowski (USA) completed the women’s in third place, also with her second medal of the junior world championships in Austria.

Moving over to the men’s event it was Wang Guochen (CHN), who claimed his second gold medal in two days with his double Full-Full and a final score of 96.93 points.

Volodymyr Kushinr (UKR) claimed silver with 90.24 points for his Full double Full, while Connor Currant (USA) rounded out the men’s podium with bronze, after scoring 88.12 points for his double Full-Full.
