Kingsbury dominates in qualifications as moguls competition heats up in Alpe d’Huez
Dec 15, 2023·FreestyleThe moguls event in Alpe d’Huez commenced with a thrilling start, showcasing Mikael Kingsbury's exceptional performance in the men's qualifications. Kingsbury emerged as the frontrunner, establishing a significant lead.
After an overnight snowfall, the course conditions were favorable. However, the weather proved unpredictable during the initial part of the event. While some competitors enjoyed clear, sunny skies, others faced challenges with visibility due to flat light.
Notably, a few top contenders struggled in the qualifications. Among them, three of the top-6 athletes, including Walter Walberg, Nick Page, and Albin Holmgren, faced difficulties and couldn’t make it into top-16.
In contrast, World Cup leader Mikael Kingsbury (CAN) excelled, securing the top spot with ease. His score, surpassing the 80-point mark, was particularly impressive in the turns, earning him 50.50 points. Although his time wasn’t the fastest, Kingsbury is known for upping his game in the finals.
Ikuma Horishima (JPN) finished the qualification day in second place, followed by Benjamin Cavet (FRA) in third. The French veteran, Cavet, is keenly anticipated to clinch his first podium of the season, especially in front of the local crowd.
