The future of Freestyle Skiing takes center stage at the Junior World Championships in Almaty
Jan 06, 2025·FreestyleThe 2025 FIS Freestyle Junior World Championships will bring the spotlight to Almaty from January 7–11, 2025. Over five days of competition, the most talented young freestyle skiers from around the globe will compete in moguls, dual moguls, dual moguls team, aerials, and aerials team events. This event is a key milestone for the next generation of freestyle skiing athletes, many of whom are already making waves on the World Cup circuit.
Shymbulak Ski Resort, the championship venue, has a proven track record of hosting premier freestyle skiing events. It has been the stage for several FIS Freestyle World Cups and the memorable 2021 FIS Freestyle World Championships. Later this season, it will also welcome elite athletes for aerials and moguls World Cup competitions, solidifying its status as one of the sport’s premier venues.
The resort’s courses are as challenging as they are picturesque. The "Yuka G" moguls course begins at an elevation of 2,750 meters, offering the highest starting gate on the World Cup circuit and a true test of skill and endurance. Meanwhile, the aerials venue at the middle station provides a stunning setting for athletes to showcase their precision and daring against the backdrop of the Tien Shan mountains. Almaty’s combination of world-class facilities, high-altitude terrain, and rich history in hosting international events, makes it an ideal location for the Junior World Championships.
In addition to the aerials competition, a Development Camp is taking place at Shymbulak, aimed at preparing young athletes to compete at the Junior World Championships. Athletes and coaches from nations including Switzerland, Canada, Ukraine, Czech Republic, and Kazakhstan are training together, sharing expertise, and fostering a spirit of collaboration that underscores the international camaraderie of freestyle skiing.
Among the athletes competing this week, Kazakhstan’s Anastassiya Gorodko stands out as a local favorite. A double medallist at previous Junior World Championships, Gorodko represents the bright future of freestyle skiing. Competing on home snow, she will be looking to inspire the crowd and deliver strong performances throughout the week. However, she will face tough competition, with promising athletes from around the world ready to rise to the challenge and make their mark on this prestigious event.
