FIS CO2 Calculator
What is it?
The FIS CO2 Calculator is a custom-designed online tool specifically developed to help measure, manage, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in snow sports. With a focus on skiing and snowboarding, the tool is tailored to support FIS World Cup and FIS Championship Local Organizing Committees (LOCs) as well as National Ski Associations (NSAs).
By using the calculator, LOCs and NSAs can gain a clearer understanding of the emissions generated by their events and activities. This empowers them to make informed decisions and take meaningful actions towards emission reduction.
The tool highlights emissions across sectors critical to snow sports, including energy use, mobility, sporting facilities, procurement, and logistics. In addition, we have created a user guide and training videos to ensure users can easily get started and make the most of the tool.
Built on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the FIS CO2 Calculator aims to simplify the process of reducing carbon emissions in a cost-effective manner. Through a collaborative approach, it promotes consistency, transparency in reported data, and long-term comparability across events.
Why it matters
At FIS, we recognize the vulnerability of the environment and the need to actively reduce the impact of global ski and snowboard competitions. As part of our FIS Impact Programme, we are committed to advocating for climate action. We support our member associations and event organizers in leading the charge towards positive change, rather than merely observing from the sidelines.
Every step taken to reduce emissions contributes to a larger, collective effort. Our goal is to show the world that snowboarding and skiing can be part of the solution to global carbon reduction. By introducing the FIS CO2 Calculator, we are pioneering emission reduction in winter sports. Measurement is a crucial first step in this strategy, allowing us to take informed action.
What sets our tool apart from many others is its ability to be used not only for emission reporting but also during the planning phase. This feature allows users to compare different options and identify the most effective strategies for reducing CO2 emissions—where real impact is made.
Short Methodological Guide
To assist National Ski Associations (NSAs) and Local Organizing Committees (LOCs) with calculating their CO2 emissions, FIS has developed a Short Methodological Guide. This guide offers clear, practical steps to help them initiate the process effectively.

Data Management - Emissions Data Use Agreement
To ensure the regulated management of data entered by each event or NSA in the FIS CO2 Calculator, a specific data use agreement has been established. Users or organizations may request this agreement if desired. The agreement specifies that FIS will utilize and publish aggregated data only, categorized by discipline or season.
To request the agreement or for more information, please contact sustainability@fis-ski.com.
Q&A Online Sessions
To support LOCs and NSAs with an existing account in enhancing their user experience, the FIS Sustainability Team is hosting a series of Q&A sessions specifically tailored to their needs. These sessions aim to provide detailed insights into the effective use of the CO2 Calculator, complementing the existing instructions and video tutorials. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, clarify any uncertainties, and gain practical tips on measuring and managing their carbon footprint.
