About the award

In 1996, the Baumgarten family suffered the tragic loss of their son Matteo Baumgarten in a car accident. He had shown great promise as a future Alpine World Cup skier and balanced his training regime with a determination to succeed in his education. The loss of beloved son motivated the Baumgarten family to remember him by recognizing those athletes that share his life’s path.

Previous winners include Martina Vozza (ITA) (vision impaired alpine skier, medalist of the 2021 Paralympic Alpine Ski World Championships and winner of the 26th International Matteo Baumgarten Award), Tanja Poutiainen (FIN), Tina Maze (SLO), Bernadette Schild (AUT), Marco Odermatt (SUI), Ramon Zenhäusern (SUI) or Ester Ledecka (CZE).
