Council appoints hosts of upcoming FIS World Championships

Having met in Reykjavik, Iceland, the day before the 55^th International Ski Congress, the FIS Council agreed on proposals to be voted by Congress and made a few major decisions, chief of which was the appointment of future hosts of FIS World Championships:

FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2031: Val Gardena (ITA)
FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2029: Narvik (NOR)
FIS Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeski World Championships 2029: Zhangjiakou (CHN)
FIS Ski Flying World Championships 2028: Planica (SLO)

In the case of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, faced with three excellent bids from which to choose, the Council agreed to award the hosting of two editions: 2029 and 2031.

In the first round of voting, Narvik received 11 votes, with eight going to Val Gardena and one to Soldeu (AND). The second round, which decided the hosts of 2031, had 14 votes for Val Gardena and 6 for Soldeu.

The candidature of Lahti (FIN) to host the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2029 did not meet some of the requirements to be formally appointed and will now have 30 days to submit its case to the FIS Council.

As part of its agenda, the Council also awarded Tignes (FRA) as hosts of the FIS Para Alpine World Ski Championships 2027.

FIS Games 2028

In agreement with Swiss-Ski and candidate Engadine/St. Moritz, the FIS Council has decided to postpone the process of awarding the hosting of the FIS Games 2028.

We have been having very constructive discussions and making clear progress, but we are talking about a huge endeavor, which we want to ensure is a flagship event for snow sports. This summer we expect to iron out all the open questions and reach a conclusion.– Johan Eliasch, FIS President
