Before the turn of the new year, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) wrapped up eight development camps that were all successful in their own right.

Between October and December, current and future skiers of all abilities hit the slopes with industry professionals on hand to guide them in the right direction.

From physical lessons to technical education, we brought athletes and coaches together to give them the tools for success.

Our ongoing commitment to raising the number of female participants saw us host two camps in Italy and Sweden, the former welcoming 11 participants preparing for the upcoming season in speed events. It provided a great opportunity for these young athletes to prepare on the slopes of Val Gardena.

The latter was held in conjunction with the Swedish Ski Association, with the aim of giving young girls the confidence and knowledge of ski cross, as well as providing coaches with the expertise to further their development. 18 athletes with little to no experience – between ages 15 and 20 – from four NSAs made up the camp.

“[It was great] to see the girls making friends and helping each other develop as a skier and a person,” said organizers.

“Some of them are pretty alone in their own country, so to come together with more girls gives them reasons to keep going with ski cross and help the sport grow.”

Norway and Austria hosted a number of Para athletes, including two camps in December that were specifically designed around the Alpine discipline. A total of 47 skiers across all events had the opportunity to prepare for the season and upcoming events.

In Lillehammer, it was all about increasing the technical skills of participants and trainers, while giving competition experience to young and inexperienced attendees.

The limits are in our minds – these athletes can do the same things as others, and we have to treat them equally.Alberto Rigoni, FIS Development Camp Coordinator

More development opportunities were afforded to competitors across Europe. From racing slalom on the Stubai Glacier to honing the craft of the next generation, it was a very successful end of 2024.

From January 2025, FIS will continue to provide relevant monthly recaps, just like this, of development camps as and when they are hosted.
