The International Olympic Committee has officially announced the host cities for the 2030 and 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, setting the stage for future winter sports spectacles in two iconic locations.

2030 Olympic Winter Games: French Alps

The French Alps are set to host the XXVI Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2030. This decision was taken by the IOC Members during the 142nd IOC Session in Paris. Their vote was subject to the submission of the Games Delivery Guarantee under timelines set by the IOC Executive Board, due to constitutional reasons in France.

The Games Delivery Guarantee is expected from the Prime Minister by 1st October 2024 and must be ratified by the French Parliament by 1st March 2025.

The French Alps delegation was led by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, alongside the Presidents of the two regions where the Games will be held, Laurent Wauquiez of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Renaud Muselier of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, and the Presidents of the French Olympic and Paralympic Committees, David Lappartient and Marie-Amélie Le Fur.

IOC President Thomas Bach expressed confidence in France’s ability to host an outstanding edition of the Winter Games, citing the creativity and flair experienced at Paris 2024 as a benchmark. President Macron emphasized France’s commitment to excellence and innovation, with a focus on ecological sustainability and inclusivity. He stated, “France pushes the limits of excellence every time it organizes a sports event. We believe in the future of our mountains, and we need to support their model for the future: innovative, ambitious, mindful of ecological issues, and accessible by everyone.”

Karl Stoss, IOC Member and Chair of the Future Host Commission, highlighted the strong public and political support for the French Alps 2030 project, noting its excellent venues and the lasting legacy of the Albertville 1992 Winter Games. French Alps 2030 aims to unite the northern and southern regions, creating a hub for winter sports that brings significant social and economic benefits.

David Lappartient, President of the French National Olympic Committee, and Marie-Amélie Le Fur, President of the French Paralympic Committee, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of simpler, responsible, and inclusive Games. Regional leaders Laurent Wauquiez and Renaud Muselier also celebrated the victory, emphasizing the legacy and community benefits of the Games.

2034 Olympic Winter Games: Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City, Utah, has been selected to host the XXVII Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2034. This decision was also taken during the 142nd IOC Session in Paris.

The Salt Lake City-Utah delegation was led by Governor Spencer Cox, Mayor Erin Mendenhall, President of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) Gene Sykes, and President of the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games Fraser Bullock.

IOC President Thomas Bach expressed confidence in Salt Lake City’s ability to deliver exceptional Games, reflecting on the enduring legacy of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Governor Cox highlighted the strong community and political support for the bid, emphasizing Utah's readiness to host another successful Winter Games.

The Olympics and Paralympics represent so much more than competition. At its core, the Olympic Movement is about building community and celebrating excellence, things we do really well in Utah. More than 80 percent of Utahns and 100 percent of our elected leaders supported our Olympic bid. We're ready to host another Olympic Winter Games, and we can't wait to welcome the world back to Utah in 2034.Spencer Cox, Governor of Utah (USA)

Karl Stoss praised the project’s high level of public and political support, noting the excellent facilities and opportunities for athletes. Salt Lake City-Utah 2034 aims to extend the transformative benefits of the 2002 Games, aligning with Olympic Agenda 2020 and regional socio-economic development plans. The Games will use 100 percent existing or temporary venues, promoting sustainability and long-term benefits for the region.

Commitment to Sustainability and Legacy

Both the French Alps and Salt Lake City have emphasized their commitment to sustainability and the legacy of the Winter Games. The IOC’s selection process focused on regions that could not only provide world-class venues and athlete experiences but also contribute to the long-term development of winter sports and the well-being of local communities.

In the French Alps, the 2030 Winter Games will leverage existing infrastructure and promote sustainable practices, aligning with global environmental goals. Initiatives include using renewable energy sources, optimizing transportation to reduce carbon emissions, and engaging local communities in environmental conservation efforts.

Similarly, Salt Lake City’s approach to the 2034 Winter Games will emphasize the use of existing venues, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. The city’s comprehensive sustainability plan includes measures to reduce waste, conserve water, and support local wildlife habitats.

Looking Ahead

The FIS eagerly anticipates the upcoming Winter Games in the French Alps and Salt Lake City. These selections underscore the global appeal and enduring legacy of the Winter Olympics. The FIS is committed to supporting these host cities in their preparations and ensuring that the athletes and fans experience unforgettable moments.

As the winter sports community looks forward to 2030 and 2034, the focus will be on celebrating the spirit of the Olympics, fostering international cooperation, and showcasing the incredible talents of athletes from around the world. The FIS congratulates the French Alps and Salt Lake City on their successful bids and looks forward to the exciting journey ahead.
