Extended Summer Grand Prix 2017 in the starting blocks
Aug 31, 2018·Nordic CombinedThe 2017/18 season in Nordic Combined will be bigger than ever. Not only the winter season has been extended by one week by the addition of Klingenthal in late March but also the Summer Grand Prix starts in its traditional timeframe in late August but will only reach its big finals in late September in Planica, Slovenia.
Oberwiesenthal will welcome the Nordic Combined men for the kick-off event and also the Ski Jumping ladies for their Continental Cup from the 18th- 20th of August and of course the home crowd will be delighted to welcome the newly minted honorary citizen Eric Frenzel.
One midweek event leads the athletes into Austria’s Montafon region. The organisers return to the calendar for the second time after the inaugural event was a big success in 2015.
The first part of the Summer Grand Prix 2017 will be concluded with two events in Oberstdorf where the senior athletes will once more be joined by the FIS Youth Cup. The young Nordic Combined athletes - male and female - will have the second event of their summer season in Oberstdorf and can look forward to joint prize giving ceremonies with the Summer Grand Prix athletes again.
After the first intense week, all teams will return to a training stage and can look forward to another opportunity to test their progress against the international competition when the Summer Grand Prix will have its maiden edition at Planica (SLO) at the end of September.
The Summer Grand Prix will be the first opportunity to see if the German dominance of the past season has the potential to spill over into the Olympic year or if new contenders make their aspirations known. While legend Hannu Manninen will not make an appearance during the summer, fellow returnee Jason Lamy Chappuis might be seen at his international comeback.
