Franz-Josef Rehrl began with ski jumping in the winter of 1999, being six years old but didn't get on cross-country skis until he was ten. From age 13 onwards, he knew he wanted to be a Nordic Combined athlete and started to work his way up the cadre system of the Austrian Federation. A first highlight came in 2012, when Rehrl won the gold medal with the Austrian team at the Junior World Championships in Erzurum, Turkey, a feat he and his teammates followed up on with a silver medal in Liberec, Czech Republic a year later.

Rehrl had his first start on the World Cup level as early as 2011 in Ramsau am Dachstein and collected first points far away from home in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 2013. After starting in Continental Cup for a while, Rehrl came to the World Cup team in spring 2016 has has been there to stay. In the winter of 2016/17, he established himself firmly on the top level and took three Top Ten ranks, as well as a first victory in a jumping part. Rehrl finished on the 19th place in the overall ranking this winter.

In his free time, Rehrl is a passionate para glider and a certified tandem pilot but also enjoys swimming, football and running.
