Jan Schmid was born and raised in Trondheim, Norway, but has two nationalities because of his Swiss parents. From the age of 16 onwards, he competed on the World Cup tour, first for the Swiss national team but in 2006, he decided to switch to the Norwegian team. At that point, the Swiss Federation refused to let him go without a transfer payment which was covered by Norwegian sponsors in the end.

At the World Championships in Liberec in 2009, he managed to win his first medals for Norway, a silver medal in the Individual Gundersen competition and a bronze medal with the team. His home World Championships in Oslo added two more bronze medals in the team large and normal hill competitions to his merit list.

The winter of 2014/15 saw a strong Jan Schmid, who added five podium ranks to his resume and finished on the overall seventh place but after his victory in Lahti in 2012, he is still waiting for a third individual World Cup victory. Two more podium positions were added to the tally in the winter of 2015/16, in which Schmid finished as seventh in the overall World Cup standings.

Together with his brother Tommy, who has also been a Nordic Combined athlete in the past, Jan likes to take part in national and international orienteeting competitions during the summer time. In addition to that, he likes computers and music.
